RCIPVOVP | Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse
Relationship abuse can occur in any kind of intimate relationship, whether the couple is dating or married, heterosexual or homosexual, adults or adolescents. Maybe you’re not sure if you are in an abusive relationship. Read through the list below, and if any of these things occur in your relationship, consider getting some help.
Does your partner:
- Hit, punch, slap, kick, shove or bite you?
- Constantly criticize you and your abilities as a spouse, partner, or parent?
- Behave in a possessive way or become extremely jealous?
- Threaten to hurt you, your children, pets, family members, friends, or self?
- Prevent you from seeing or limit your access to family or friends?
- Get suddenly angry or lose his/her temper?
- Destroy personal property or throw things around?
- Deny you access to family assets like bank accounts, credit cards or the car?
- Control all finances and force you to account for what you spend?
- Use intimidation or manipulation to control you or your children?
- Prevent you from going where you want to and when you want to?
- Deny you access to food, beverages, sleep, medicine, or medical care?
- Force you to have sex or engage in sexual behavior against your will?
- Prevent you from getting or keeping a job or from going to school?
- Humiliate or embarrass you in front of others?
If your answer is yes to any of these questions, you may be experiencing domestic or relationship abuse. Remember – the abuse is not your fault, and you are not alone. Help is available. The RCIP/VOVP offers counseling and other services to survivors of relationship abuse and domestic violence.
