Emergency Department Care
When coming to the Emergency Department (ED) at Long Island College Hospital, survivors of sexual assault are given priority treatment and are immediately triaged to a private examination room. A survivor may have a volunteer advocate or social worker present during their time in the E.D., who is there for the survivor and available to provide the survivor with information and act as a liaison with hospital staff.
Survivors of sexual assault receive comprehensive medical treatment - including prophylaxsis for HIV and emergency contraception, if indicated. Survivors may have a Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit taken, to facilitate prosecution should the survivor choose to make a police report and press charges. Examinations and evidence collection are usually performed by Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners (SAFEs). SAFEs are medical personnel – doctors, nurses, midwives, physician’s assistants - who have chosen to undergo special, comprehensive training on issues of trauma and sexual assault, as well as evidence collection and documentation, and are able to provide survivors with excellent care, administered with sensitivity and compassion.
The examination room is in the Fast Track division of the ED. The room is equipped with its own bathroom and shower. The RCIP/VOVP is able to provide replacement clothing for a survivor, such as clean underwear and socks, should they be needed following an exam.
Survivors can be provided with transportation from the ED, and the RCIP/VOVP will work with the survivor to coordinate follow up services.
