Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner Program

Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners, or SAFEs, are medical professionals – doctors, nurses, midwives, physician’s assistants – who choose to undergo a comprehensive training to be able to work with survivors of sexual assault and provide them with the best possible care as well as thorough evidence collection and documentation. SAFEs will conduct medical examinations of a survivor of sexual assault with compassion and sensitivity to the issues of trauma, as well as forensic examinations utilizing the Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit. The kit collects evidence from the body using swabs and other means and can be held by the hospital for up to six months, should the survivor be unsure about making a police report right away.
