Volunteer Advocates
A vital component of the RCIP/VOVP is its core of volunteer advocates. Advocates undergo a rigorous, comprehensive training on issues of trauma and are certified by the New York State Department of Health. At any time of the day or night, a survivor may come to the Emergency Department (ED) at Long Island College Hospital and have either a volunteer advocate or RCIP/VOVP social worker with them during this difficult time. Advocates are on-call every weekday night and throughout the weekend, and are able to meet a survivor at the hospital and remain with them during their stay in the ED. The advocate can provide information that will help the survivor make necessary decisions, as well as facilitate communication with hospital staff and police, should the survivor choose to make a report at that time. The advocate’s role is to be there for the survivor, providing crisis counseling, emotional support and information and referrals, and can connect the survivor with on-going services at the RCIP/VOVP.
